How important is an muffler gasket?

On my 16 HP briggs and stratton intek engine the gasket where the muffler meets the opening for the exhaust, has dried out and cracked in half. How important is it for there to be a tight seal for the exhaust going into the muffler? Noise control really doesn't matter to me. If I were to seal it would liquid gasket work?
