My ipod is screwing up. I can't reset it cuz after I put the hold on to toggle it the logo instantly comes up

My computer is not recognizing it and neither is itunes 7. I cannot run my ipod updater cuz I get a message "invalid ipod service version" As soon as I plug it in to my computer it says "do not disconnect" how do I reset it and put my playlist back on to it.
