How can I tell if I need to replace the power jack?

I knocked my laptop a while back and the power jack became wiggly. It's a sony vaio, so it should be relatively simple to replace the jack, but I'm wondering if it is simply knocke out of place and needs to be straightened out. How can you test it to tell if it actually needs to be replaced? The power cord will still connect and power the laptop if it is held at the right angle, though at certain angles it will get very overheated and I need to take it out and let it cool (if that helps at all).
